New Delhi: Amidst rising tensions in Western Asia (Iran-Israel-USA) and war-like conditions, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 will proceed as scheduled. BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla stated that there is no uncertainty regarding the tournament, and the inaugural match will be played on March 28.
Opening Clash: Champion RCB vs SRH
The season’s opening match will be held at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. It will feature the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), taking on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
War and Security Concerns
Due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, several questions were raised regarding the travel of foreign players and the supply of fuel and LPG. However, the BCCI has provided the following assurances:
- Player Safety: The Board is in constant communication with foreign embassies and security agencies. Travel routes for players will be modified if necessary.
- Logistics: Despite the LPG shortage and rising fuel prices in the country, alternative arrangements have been made for stadium lighting and team transportation.
Elections and Schedule
Currently, the BCCI has released the schedule for the first phase (March 28 to April 12), consisting of 20 matches. The dates for the remaining matches will be announced after the assembly election dates for Tamil Nadu, Assam, and West Bengal are finalized.
What’s New This Season?
- New Venues: This year, Punjab Kings will play their home matches at the newly constructed Mullanpur (New Chandigarh) stadium.
- Double Headers: The first phase alone will feature four double-header matches (two matches in a single day).
