Canada Visa Rules 2026: Mandatory Course Alignment for Work Permits

Jalandhar/Amritsar: Canada has implemented strict immigration reforms for 2026, making course selection the most critical factor for international students. Starting this year, obtaining a study permit no longer guarantees a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) unless the field of study aligns with Canada’s labor market needs.

Key Policy Updates:

  • PGWP Eligibility: For college and diploma students, work permits are now restricted to 1,107 specific programs categorized under Healthcare, STEM, Skilled Trades, Agriculture, and Transport.
  • Exemptions: Graduates of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral programs remain exempt from these field-of-study requirements and are eligible for work permits regardless of their major.
  • Proof of Funds: The cost-of-living requirement has been raised to CA$22,895 plus first-year tuition.
  • Work Hours: International students can now work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic sessions.

Advice for Punjabi Students:

Immigration experts in Punjab warn that “General Business” or “Arts” diplomas may lead to a dead end regarding post-study work rights. Students are advised to choose professional and technical courses to ensure their path to Permanent Residency (PR) remains open.
